A crucial feature of the foundation in any teacher-learner relationship is rapport. Although considerations will be made including environment when establishing optimal learning conditions, the concept of pairing is widely practice in ABA to assist in the reduction of behaviour and establishing instructional control. Forming rapport with a learner is the primary goal when first attempting to work with a new student.

Pairing is the process of engaging in activities, materials, or actions a learner demonstrates a preference for, and providing these preferences from the instructor themself. This includes positive praise, imitation, engagement, or excitement, all of which identify and encourage appropriate actions or behaviour. The purpose of the process is to intentionally develop an association between the preference and the instructor, to establish a strong relationship that supports effective acquisition of skills and a reduction of problematic behaviour.

When applying progressive ABA practice, it is essential to establish meaningful connections in a positive, caring, and exciting way, so the learner desire interaction and engagement. Maintaining positive relationships are effective means to promote learning, minimize times of avoidance or problem behaviours, and help work through these challenges when they may occur. Students who find trust in a teacher, will access this relationship in moments of difficulty to help them regain control of themselves and in engage in expected behaviour for learning.
